French education has become one of the most essential factors in the country’s future in the past couple of years. Since the start of Covid-19, the educational system has begun to change to correspond with the current demands of the circumstances. Since all schools and colleges were studying remotely, there have been some requirements to find ways of technology implementation that will help the studying process become faster and easier. So let us find out what new technologies and methods have been performed to meet the requirements. 

A task-based approach to teaching 

Before the pandemic and overall changes in the world and educational system, the French educational system was task-based. When kids went to school, the day-to-day classroom working method was to revise the previous lessons, do homework check-ups, and lastly, representation of the new lesson. The overall time for the lesson was separated into three parts, allowing us to do each sequence separately and focus on each part accordingly. It was also highlighted by various experts that in the French educational system, many teachers had the same method of separation to focus on different skills at a time. Those key parts are written and oral presentation and written and oral understanding. Each class lasts two hours, and during the class students learn the subjects by reading, discussing, and writing assignments.

Given the fact that France is new to entering the EdTech industry, the options of having digital approaches are not that many. However, the first steps were already made, and they are making great progress. There are many ideas to implement in the educational system, and many start-ups are already working on them to find funding and start their projects. No one could have thought that adding technologies to education would bring so many improvements to the overall educational system. However, making changes in the industry and seeing great improvements, makes us think that there are many things that could be changed for the better. France has a great potential to show various methods in the EdTech industry that various other countries can use as well.

Some researchers believe that the creation of a “theory of everything” is quite possible, but humans will not be able to handle it, unlike super-smart AI.

Physics is known to study the mysteries of nature. However, the deeper people delved into studying them, the more questions they had. The main question was formulated by Stephen Hawking: Is there one common explanation for all phenomena? Hawking believed that “the theory of everything” would be the answer to this fundamental question. The scientist also believed that deriving a theory of everything was realistic. And some of today’s researchers support him, believing, however, that it would be within the power of a superpowered computer, not a human being. The science editor of nytimes.com, Dennis Overbay, discusses this possibility with a number of physicists and computer scientists in his column.

Why researchers are teaching AI to “think like a physicist.”

Overbay reports that at least one research institute is seriously engaged in “pumping up” computational systems in physics. That’s the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions, opened by MIT professor Max Tegmark and led by physicist Jesse Thaler. According to the latter, the goal is for computers to learn to “think like physicists. And the scientists have already succeeded in doing something – in 2020, they injected data from the famous Feynman Lectures in Physics textbook into the AI system, and eventually it was able to analyze it for patterns and reconstruct all 100 formulas that were considered in the book.

Dr. Tegmark believes that it would not be difficult for a neural network to detect new particles based on data from the Large Hadron Collider. However, the researcher acknowledges that there are limits to what machines can do that are not capable of “figuring out” things like Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle or relativity theory on their own.

“The reason I work on improving AI systems is to be able to understand the principle of how a superpowered neural network works, if we manage to create one. Otherwise, I fear the consequences: the idea that we simply won’t understand how super-intelligent AI works scares me,” says Tegmark.

Dr. Thaler, claims that he has been able to “encode” some of his knowledge into the machine, which will then provide answers that are easier for him to interpret.

“It’s like a dialogue between a man and a machine. The computer gradually stops being just a box that makes decisions for you and that you don’t understand,” he says.

Recently, Dr. Thaler and his colleagues loaded a large array of data from the Large Hadron Collider into a neural network, and without any additional programs, it was able to distinguish between quarks and gluons (types of elementary particles – ed.), not even knowing what they are. Then the machine was asked the question: what are quarks? And it found the right answer – (so-called) up-quarks and down-quarks.

“The neural network, having no idea about quantum field theory, managed to find the patterns. I was shocked,” the researcher shares.

Will AI be able to create a theory of everything?

“Some physicists believe that the next big leap in technological development will come with the emergence of artificial intelligence for quantum computers. Such machines are still in development, but have great promise,” the author writes, citing Seth Lloyd, a quantum computing expert at MTI, and asks

Could a machine formulate the principles of quantum field theory or relativity theory?
Could it lead to a theory that we humans cannot understand?
Could we end up in a “matrix” or in a world controlled by SkyNet, like in the movie “Terminator”?

All these questions Dennis Overbye asked physicists and computer scientists. And here’s what they answered.

Jaron Lanier, a computer engineer at Microsoft, believes that predictions of an “almighty AI” are an exaggeration. – is an exaggeration.

“An AI system is not a creature like a cat. It’s just a working algorithm,” he said.

Steven Weinberg, a Nobel Prize-winning professor at the University of Texas at Austin, called the suggestion that humans may not be smart enough to understand a theory of everything that can be formulated by a machine “disturbing.”

“But I suspect that we also won’t be smart enough to design a computer that can create that theory,” the scientist responded.

On the eve of the invasion of Iraq in 2002, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld uttered his famous tirade: “There are known knowns, which are things we know we know. There are known unknowns, that is, things we now know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns – things we don’t know we don’t know them about.” He believed that “it is the latter category that tends to be the most difficult.” Rumsfeld can be reproached with many things, but when it comes to armaments, his words are as aphoristic as Churchill’s phrase that generals always prepare for past wars. Both are about the unpredictability of a future steeped in military secrets.

A little more than a year ago, U.S. Army General John Murray, in an interview with Defense News, named the three main technologies of future warfare: artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and robotics.

“To make all three technologies work in a digital environment, there has to be a robust and resilient network, a data architecture, and talent,” he said. How to succeed in this arena? With convergence that can combine forces in five areas of warfare: air, land, sea, space and the digital environment. The Americans have already launched Project Convergence and conducted a six-week exercise last fall. They were a clear demonstration of how time itself becomes a weapon. Previously it took 20 minutes from target identification to a shot, but now that time has been reduced to 20 seconds.

Such a leap seems unbelievable, but only until you look at the ambitious documents of the military, which prescribe a perspective for decades to come. For example, the U.S. Air Force’s 2009-2047 Unmanned Aerial Systems Flight Plan records that “In 2047, technology will be able to reduce the OODA [observe, orient, decide, act] cycle time to micro- or nanoseconds. Just as a master chess player can outperform skilled chess players, [drones] will be able to respond at these speeds, and hence this cycle becomes a “perceive and act” vector.

Increasingly, people will not be “in the cycle,” but rather “near the cycle,” tracking the execution of certain decisions. At the same time, advances in artificial intelligence will allow systems to make combat decisions and act within legal and political constraints without necessarily requiring human participation.”

A little more than a year ago, U.S. Army General John Murray named three major technologies for future warfare: artificial intelligence, unmanned systems and robotics.

On paper, this looks pretty decent, and the phrase “within legal and political constraints” applied to robots may be endearing. However, Paul Scharr, a Pentagon defense expert and former U.S. Army Ranger, has concerns about the “autonomy” of artificial intelligence. In 2018, he released a book called “The Army Without Humans: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War,” which generated enormous reading interest and was among Bill Gates’ must-read lists. Scharr begins it with a dramatic episode in the fall of 1983, at the height of the Cold War, months after U.S. President Ronald Reagan announced the Strategic Defense Initiative, dubbed “Star Wars” in the press, and three weeks after a Soviet missile destroyed a commercial airliner flying from Alaska to Seoul that unexpectedly entered Soviet airspace. At the time, 269 people were killed, including an American congressman. Fearing retaliation, the Soviets were on guard and deployed a satellite early-warning system called “Oko” to monitor American missile launches.

On September 26, just after midnight, the system issued a report: the United States had launched a nuclear missile at the Soviet Union. Sirens howled in the Serpukhov-15 bunker outside Moscow, and the message “launch” was displayed on a giant red backlit screen. Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, who was on combat duty, saw it all, but had doubts: could it be a mistake in the system?

The combination of two opposite properties of the resulting material will help eliminate errors in quantum computers. This will bring us one step closer to creating stable quantum systems, the researchers believe.

Physicists from Aalto University in Finland have received ultrathin bilayer material, which has quantum properties and can be used in the electronic devices of the new generation. About this study writes Phys.org.

As a rule, to create such materials requires expensive rare-earth metals, but the scientists have found an alternative. According to the researchers, the new compound can provide the creation of the original platform for quantum computing and accelerate development in this area. At the same time, it is relatively easy to make.

The team tried to create a spin (from spin – rotation, – ed.) liquid – this is one of the magnetic states of matter, which is characterized by special impulses of elementary particles at low temperatures. Typically, they create a single layer of tantalum disulfide one atom thick, but in the process of treatment appear two-layer “islands” of the substance.

Scientists have discovered that the interaction between the two layers of these “islands” produces a phenomenon known as the Kondo effect, leading to a tangled state of matter and a system with heavy fermions – particles in which electrons behave as if they are much heavier than they really are. They are used in studies of the quantum properties of materials. For example, materials with heavy fermions can act as topological superconductors, suitable for creating more stable qubits and reducing the probability of errors in quantum computers.

“The study of complex quantum materials is hampered by the properties of natural compounds. Our goal is to create artificial designer materials that can be easily tuned and controlled externally to extend the range of exotic phenomena that can be realized in the laboratory,” said Professor Peter Lillieroth.

Although both layers are composed of tantalum sulfide, they have different features. One exhibits metal properties and conducts electrons, while the other locks them in a stable atomic lattice. Their combination results in heavy fermines.

“Creating such a material in reality would be of enormous benefit if systems with heavy fermions could be easily incorporated into electrical devices and tuned externally,” added Viliam Vagno, lead author of the study.

The scientists emphasized that the two-layer material would help investigate the so-called quantum criticality, when a substance begins to move from one quantum state to another. In between, the whole system reacts strongly to the slightest change in the environment and can turn into even more exotic quantum matter.

“In the future, we will study how the system reacts to the rotation of each sheet relative to the other, and try to change the connection between the layers to tune the material to quantum critical behavior,” Peter Lillieroth shared his plans.
